Lawrence Lau


Professor Lawrence Lau Juenyee, JP is a Hong Kong economist and the former ViceChancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was a nonofficial member of the Executive Council of Hong Kong from 2009 to 2012. Before joining CUHK he was an economics professor at Stanford University.

Lau was born onDecember 1944 in Zunyi, Guizhou. His maternal grandfather was famed calligrapher and Kuomingtang leader Yu Youren of Shaanxi Province. He received his secondary education from St. Pauls Coeducational College in Hong Kong, his B.S. degree in Physics and Economics, with Great Distinction, from Stanford University in 1964, and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1966 and 1969 respectively. He joined the faculty of the Department of Economics of Stanford University in 1966 and was promoted to Professor of Economics in 1976.
